Family First: How I helped my sister land an internship in her dream industry, the Wonsulting Way

Throughout my years of helping job-seekers, I’ve helped thousands land offers in their dream companies. Whether it’s Jackie Minn receiving an offer at Curology, Sierra Miller receiving an offer at Conservation Legacy, Sheetal Dalal landing an offer at Qualcomm, Kevin Luong at Tesla, Matt Wilson also at Tesla, Debbi Shibuya at TikTok, Chika Chima at Goldman Sachs, and many more this past month, our mission at Wonsulting is simple: to turn underdogs into winners.

Although we’ve had hundreds of job-seekers land jobs already in 2021 through Wonsulting, my favorite Wonsulting Success Story has to do with my sister: Rachel Javier.

But before I go into the success story, let’s give a background about my family.

I have a loving family: my mom is the only one who’s worked in the family, being a nurse for the past 35+ years and my dad was the one who would be the stay-at-home dad but taught me everything in regards to helping others and most of all, how to play basketball. My brother, Christopher Javier, is a high-school teacher and always loves to educate students to help future generations of leaders.

And there’s my younger sister. Rachel is the youngest in our family of 5, 6 years apart from me. Throughout her life, she’s looked up to me as a big brother to help guide her down the path towards success. She’s always been interested in marketing & entertainment field; pre-covid, she’d attend many different concerts and was friends with many celebrities.

One goal that she had was to break into the marketing & entertainment industry, and we were able to do just that as she landed an offer at Flighthouse Media.

How did it happen? In this article, I’ll break down how we were able to do it through some of the Wonsulting Strategies and hope that each of you can do the same to land into your dream careers.

Identifying Companies

When my sister was looking for internships, she had a wide scope of companies that she wanted to work for in marketing & entertainment. Since there were so many companies, we broke it down into different sections based on the following:

  • What companies were recruiting for internships
  • Which companies were in the marketing & entertainment field
  • What companies were hiring for Marketing/Content Interns

By identifying which companies were hiring for these specific internships, we then were able to strategize exactly what she wanted to get into and how to go about it. Preparation was key; she studied how these companies operated and recruited which allowed her to make herself a qualified candidate and stand out.

The Application

For the application, Flighthouse Media posted internships in the Marketing realm in January. We knew that many job-seekers would simply apply to the role by simply emailing their resume and “hope for the best”; thus, we decided to do a different approach.

Similar to the Wonsulting Project 2020 and my strategy of presenting a project from my class to get into Snapchat, we created a deck which showcased her experiences, interests, and what she brought to the table.

It was simple yet straight to the point. The deck consisted of a few slides which conveyed the following:

  • An introduction of herself
  • Her relevant experiences/skills to the positions
  • What her passions were
  • Why she was qualified for the role
  • Project Examples
  • Contact information

We worked on creating the deck for a week, showcasing her experiences that were relevant to the role. Two of her experiences that were relevant were her internships at NoFiltr and JoyBox Media. By showing what she did and the impact she made in each position, this allowed her to be a qualified candidate to the hiring manager for the team.

Finding The Hiring Manager

After creating the deck, we found the hiring manager for the team; how did we identify who the hiring manager was?

  • We looked at employees who worked at Flighthouse Media and the marketing team
  • We looked at their activity to see who was posting regarding the position and found someone who did

After doing this, we actually guessed the email that the person had; the first email we sent actually bounced back. Thus, she then sent a personalized invite to the hiring manager that we always teach at Wonsulting such as in our Wonsulting Resources. We included the deck attached to the personalized invite with a link to the Google Drive; the hiring manager then responded a few days later asking to chat on the phone, and she then crushed the interview which landed her the internship.

What was the craziest part? The Flighthouse Media team already knew her from her TikTok (194K+) and mentioned it in the interview!

Conclusion

Why I share this story with my sister landing this internship is because what we try to teach at Wonsulting is all about unconventional methods to land your dream role. Rachel did what most people don’t do, and that’s simply listen to the advice that I try to give on different platforms including LinkedIn, Instagram, and TikTok.

Sometimes, all you need is one person to believe in you. In this case, all you need is a big brother to look after his little sister.
